City leaders say minority business owners make up half of the businesses in Tampa, but bring in less than five percent of the county's revenue. The Tampa Chamber's Minority Business Accelerator Program is giving business owners the tools they need to grow and bring more revenue to the region, and the effort is already stimulating growth in the local economy. The program started with its inaugural cohort group in January. "It's really about starting with the minority business community and who is oftentimes underserved or underrepresented and giving them the resources to really be key players and drive our economy forward," said LaKendria Robinson, Director of Minority Business Accelerator and Economic Inclusion.

Chamber Installs New Leadership at 132nd Annual Meeting
The Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce held its 132nd Annual Meeting presented by HCI today at the Tampa Convention Center. A sold-out crowd of almost 1,000 attendees came together to celebrate the Chamber's 2017 achievements. 2017 Chamber Chair Mike Griffin of Savills Studley Occupier Services, passed the gavel to 2018 Chair Steven Bernstein, Esq., Fisher Phillips. The Chamber also received greetings from Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn and Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners Chairwoman Sandy Murman. The Chamber collected toys at the event, teaming with Metropolitan Ministries to help bring gifts to the Holiday Tent, which serves more than 19,000 children in the Bay area.

For Derek Mateos, the ongoing expansion at Tampa International Airport has meant more than just new flights and destinations; it has opened a world of opportunity and growth for his business.

“We poured the first bit of concrete on this billion-dollar project,” said the locally-based, Cuban-American entrepreneur and president of Matcon Construction Services Inc. His firm is one of 145 minority- or women-owned businesses participating in the nearly $1 billion master plan that will ensure the growth of Tampa Bay’s main airport.

“We’ve been out here for three years doing the tunnel work,” Mateos said.
